銀肯是蒙語，漢語意思是“永久”，銀肯響沙陡立於罕臺河谷西岸，有清泉從坡底涌出。
響沙灣沙高110米，寬400米，依着滾滾沙丘，面臨大川，背風向陽坡，地形呈月牙形分佈，坡度爲45度角傾斜，形成一個巨大的沙丘迴音壁。

響沙灣的沙漠面積約有1.6萬平方公里，沙坡斜度約50°，其上沒有任何的植被覆蓋，從沙丘的頂部向下滑會響起“嗡嗡”之聲。響沙灣的沙鳴奇蹟至今仍是一個謎團，幹百年來，人們解釋不了響沙的成因，卻賦予它許多美麗的傳說。傳說很早以前;這裏是一座規模宏大的喇嘛廟，正當千餘喇嘛聚衆頌經，擊鼓吹號時，突然狂風大作，傾刻間，將寺廟掩埋在沙漠之中，這聲音，便是喇嘛們冤魂未散，至今仍在擊鼓、吹號的聲音.....傳說固然美麗，但不能揭開響沙之迷。近年來學者提出了“地形說”、“共鳴箱原理”、“靜電學說”來揭示它的成因，還有人認爲，響沙灣沙丘之中的含金量較大，因此發出響聲;也有人認爲沙漠表面的沙子細且乾燥是沙鳴的原因。
然而，沒有哪種解釋將響沙灣的謎團徹底解開。
