面試前留給船東的第一印象往往是剛剛與船東見面時留下的。經驗告訴我們，很多船員儘管英文不錯，可是往往不知道如何和船東恰當地打招呼，從而影響了自己的面試成績。其實，最常見的打招呼辦法就很有效。進考官面試房間後，切勿長時間東張西望，而要在外派公司的引導人員的示意下，坐到指定的座位上。然後，通常是由外派公司的人員互相介紹你和麪試你的船東。在介紹完後，你要向考官主動打一下招呼，說一聲“你好!”或“How do you do?”

及“I am John, very glad to meet you here”。這裏要提醒您的是，你落座後，一定要看看對面坐着幾位考官。在打招呼時，要和每個人打招呼，包括身體主動前傾，和每個人握握手，或有禮貌地和每個人點點頭。千萬不能忘了其中的一個或幾個。在打完招呼後，要回到指定的座位，端莊坐下。坐下後，通常船東考官會首先向你提出問題，要你回答。

若對方沒有立即向你提問題，你可以自己首先打破僵局，最好的方法是主動介紹一下自己，若外派公司已經把你介紹給考官了，你在自我介紹時要介紹那些別人介紹你時沒有向考官提供的資訊，比如你的職位、你的姓名、你來自中國的哪個省份或城市等等。但自我介紹時，要言簡意賅，切忌長篇大論。

主動熱情地和考官交流會使自己易於被考官接受和喜歡。一般認爲，熱情是做好一項工作的非常重要的前提條件之一。但是，熱情要有個度，開放自己的精神空間也要有度。面試的背景要求考官和考生之間要有一定的距離。如果考生和考官過於親密，容易讓人產生動機不純或交際態度不穩重的看法。想與考官見面熟的急於求成的做法是不妥當的。既要主動接近，又要保持一定的距離，這就是“熱情”的全面含義。
